Week One: Introduction to the Course

Some artist and designers that have impacted the art world:

  • Stefan Sagmeister: Graphic Designer

    • Used type in impactful way

    • Ex. Carved words into his own body, wrote ontop of photographs

  • Dinh Q Le: Fine Arts Photographer

    • Takes photographs, but then weaves them together

  • Feliz Gonzalez Torrez: Visular Artist

    • In  Portrait of Ross, amount of candy that diminishes represents his partner's diminishing weight after AIDs

  • Anish Kapoor:: Sculptor

    • Created the "Bean" in Chiago (Cloud Gate)

      • ​Reflection of gandeur of Chicago skyline

  • Chris Burden: Performance Artist

    • In Through the Night Softly, Burden drags himself on the ground through broken glass on pavement, only clad in a bikini bottom

      • What if it was gravel? Marbles? 

    • Shown on TV as and ad to evoke feelings that one would not usually feel when watching ads on TV

    • Must complete safety orientation to be able to use equiptment

    • Introducted some of key faculty members

      • Help with printing, equipment use

    • Enjoy rest of semester

  • Nikki Sullivan: Writing Help

    • Go to her for writing resources. Will help you in proofing papers, but must have specific needs

    • Make appointments ahead of time, give at least week's time before paper is due

    • Will usually look at one paragraph that you have, proof that, then you can go from there

    • Can contact her by email
